FAQ:

How many rented council homes are lost each year through the right to buy?

Sales have been steadily increasing with 150 new applications each month. In 2001/02 there were 1,007 sales. The Housing Business Plan anticipates more than 1,800 sales in 2002/03 and 2300 in 2003/04. 2,000 sales a year are predicted for 2004/05 and 2005/06.

These figures are based on the fact that there is currently a backlog of 4,000 applications to buy and a steady stream of new applications of an average 150 per month of which 60% proceed to completion.

Therefore, even if there were no stock transfers to social landlords, or stock loss through demolitions, the council will have 8,100 fewer rented homes in 4 years time. This is 30% of the current rented stock.
